10 July 2008 - R/V Wecoma

Undergraduate Mindy Ingebretson and Doug Beck demonstrating an Immersion SuitUndergraduate Mindy Ingebretson and Doug Beck demonstrating an Immersion SuitWe spent a beautiful day on July 9 loading the ship and going out to lunch and dinner in Newport. The restaurant at the Rogue brewery is alway a treat. Our setup was smooth and there was an air of excitement. Several of the team members are undergraduate students who have never been out on a research cruise.

Once we left the dock at 10 am on July 10th, however, all that excitement was rocked away by the high seas. Even those of us sporting scopolamine patches were feeling a little off. But we worked through it and did CTD casts at 6 stations (SH-10, 30, 70, 100, d, f), and sampled water and sediments at two stations (SH-70 and SH-f) on the Strawberry Hill line. We even enjoyed our safety briefing, during which Undergraduate student Mindy Ingebretson volunteered to demonstrate the Immersion Suits.
