Title:
Examples of Four-Dimensional Data Assimilation in Oceanography

Abstract
The talk will discuss the theoretical and practical developments of several four dimensional ocean data assimilation systems. Starting with a brief overview on data assimilation approaches, the talk is divided into two parts. In the first part, I will discuss the development of eddy-permitting 4DVAR assimilation systems based on the MITGCM model and its adjoint. A demonstration of the performance of this system will be shown in the tropical Pacific, in a coastal area of San Diego and in the Gulf of Mexico. The second part of the talk will focus on the development of Kalman filtering techniques for data assimilation into coastal and regional physical and biological models of the Mediterranean Sea. Two approaches that enable simultaneous assimilation of physical and biological observations into coupled physical-biological models will be presented and compared. The talk will end with a discussion on new directions and applications in four dimensional ocean data assimilation.
