Journal Club: Coastal Margin Observatories
Meetings dates: specific Fridays (see Fall 2006 schedule), 1:00-2:30
Meeting duration: 1.5 hours
Location: TBA
Coordinator: Antonio Baptista (baptista@stccmop.org)
Objectives
To introduce or keep participants update on existing and emerging coastal margin observatories, and to the science that they are enabling or are designed to enable. Observatories are defined as integrations of observation networks, modeling systems, and information systems, designed to collect and broadly disseminate data and simulations, both in real-time and as long-term aggregates.
Participation
Year-round, not-for-credit, participation is open to all CMOP students, staff and faculty. Once a year, the journal club will be offered as a formal 2-credit reading group for OHSU students (next offering: Spring 2007). To inquire on remote participation via video conferencing, contact hadfielt@ohsu.edu.
Structure
A typical meeting will focus on one observatory, and will consist of two sequential elements, each focused respectively on:
• the physical and ecological context, and the set-up, operation and capabilities of the observatory; and
• a specific technology or science outcome of the observatory.
Each element will last approximately 45 minutes, and will consist of
• a prepared 15 minute presentation, enabled by a reference publication and (where appropriate) a web site;
• a 15 minute panel discussion, with a moderator and a 3-member panel; and
• a 15 minute open Q&A period to the members of the panel.
Participants will alternate in the roles of presenters and panel members, according to a pre-defined schedule. All participants are expected to read the enabling publications prior to the meeting. The coordinating faculty (or an invited guest) will serve as panel moderator.
