Sensors in Tow

Kivuiq towed

Volunteer sea-kayaker Tim Mattson tows Kivuiq, a mobile sensor platform equipped with advanced aquatic instrumentation, around Baker Bay. He is assisting CMOP scientists, led by António Baptista, gain valuable biogeochemical data in difficult-to-access areas of the Columbia River estuary. The sensors on the kayak measure salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity and fluorescence while being towed through Baker Bay. At the same time, the data it collects is transmitted back to CMOP. The scientific goal is to gain a better understanding of how the biological activity in lateral bays affect the Columbia River estuary.
