Run Red, Run Deep

AUV Research

CMOP scientists Craig McNeil and Trina Litchendorf deploy an autonomous underwater vehicle near a red algae bloom in the Columbia River estuary. The 4-foot-long robotic vehicle is equipped with a variety of sensors to gather information about the patches of red algae that grow and move in the water.

The work is part of a Plankton Blooms science initiative to advance the understanding of how these red water species are able to bloom in a large river-dominated estuary.
