Lateral Bay Exchange

The marine layer blanketed the estuary as CMOP scientists collected data and water samples off the Training Vessel Forerunner. The research - led by Jim Lerczak, Oregon State University, Fred Prahl, Oregon State University, and Joe Needoba, Oregon Health & Science University - is part of a science initiative to study the biogeochemical exchange between lateral bays and the Columbia River estuary. The scientific goal is to better understand if lateral bays of the estuary are biological and biogeochemical ‘hotspots’ due to the increased residence time of the water relative to the main stem of the river and the estuary.
