Inside SATURN

CMOP scientist and Oregon State University professor Fred Prahl checks methane readings from one of the many instruments installed at the SATURN-04 observation station in Cathlamet Bay. The instruments in this and other SATURN stations allow Prahl and a collaborative team of engineers, scientists, and modelers to understand the metabolic processes in three major bays of the Columbia River estuary. The Lateral Bay science initiative aims to understand the biogeochemical exchange between lateral bays and the estuary, and to develop approaches and models to quantify the contribution of these exchanges to the functioning of the estuary bioreactor.
