CMOP Director Gives Keynote Lecture at the International Conference on Water, Energy, and Environment

António Baptista, director of the Center for Coastal Margin Observation & Prediction, gave a keynote lecture at the 2011 International Conference on Water, Energy and Environment (ICWEE) on November 15 in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.

The four-day conference, organized by the American University of Sharjah in cooperation with the United Arab Emirates University, promotes global collaboration among faculty, students, engineers, and managers on ecological economics and water, energy, and environment resources management.

The ICWEE conference provides a forum for distinguished guest speakers and practitioners from over 40 countries to address recent research results and to present and discuss related issues in water regulation and policies, water resources and sustainable development of the region, progress in water protection and remediation, desalination, wastewater treatment, energy, environmental impact, economic management and development of water resources, environment, and other water related topics.

Baptista's presentation, "Coastal margin 'Collaboratories’: a scientific foundation for decision-making towards sustainability," was one of only four keynote lectures given during the ICWEE conference. Other invited lecturers included Dr. Hans G. Huber, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Huber Group, Berching, Germany, Mark Holtzapple, Professor of Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M University, USA., and Dr. Kiminori Sato, Department of Environmental Science, Tokyo, Japan.

The ICWEE program includes peer reviewed technical presentations of over 300 papers, posters, short courses, industrial workshops, and exhibition for local and regional industries. Selected research papers will be published in a number of peers' international journals such as International Journal of Environmental Engineering.
