Instructions for Using the NANOOS Pilot Project Interactive Map

Top Bar

The top bar provides a project identifier for the Pilot Project, and provides links (by clicking on the respective logos) for the Northwest Association of Networked Ocean Observing Systems (NANOOS) and for Ocean.US, the coordinating entity for the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing Systems.

Left Bar

The top part of the left bar contains links to information about the NANOOS Pilot Project, and about regional observing systems and programs. The bottom part of the left bar includes on/off toggles for the display of information. Display options subject to on/off toggle include beaches and forecasts.


Interactive Map

The interactive map displays a variety of oceanographic observations and forecasts for the Pacific Northwest coastal margin.

You can zoom in or out the map, by using the slider on the map with '+' meaning to zoom in and '-' to zoom out. Zooming will be centered on the center of the map. You can adjust the region shown in the map by left clicking and holding the mouse anywhere in the non-active surface of the map, and by moving the mouse horizontally.

The default map view shows observation stations maintained by various regional observatories and by the federal government in estuaries and plumes in the NANOOS domain. Colors differentiate among different observatories.

Clicking in a station symbol brings up a balloon with the name of the station and of the respective observation network. Clicking on the name of the station brings up a link to data, via the interface of the regional observatory or national observation backbone system that maintains that particular station.

Selected vessels conducting oceanographic cruises may also be displayed, if active and in real-time communication through NANOOS partner networks.

Surface salinity forecasts for selected estuaries can be overlaid on the observation stations (use bottom left bar to toggle on). Forecasts represent most current conditions, with times displayed in the forecast images.

As an alternative or in complement, the map view can show the location of beach monitoring programs in Oregon and Washington (with active links to data). Use the bottom left bar to toggle on this view.


Data Quality

The quality of the observational data accessible through the NANOOS Pilot Project Interactive Map depends on the quality control procedures adopted by the originating observatory. An effort of standardization is in progress.

Terms of Use

Use of any map image obtained from the NANOOS Pilot Project Interactive Map must be cited as "Map created by NANOOS partners". Use of any data or image obtained from a link from the Interactive Map should follow the guidelines for use defined by the entity/program serving the information.

The photographic imagery made available for display through Google maps is subject to specific terms and conditions for use.
