Description
The Northwest Association of Networked Ocean Observing Systems (NANOOS) seeks a skilled and self-motivated individual to help us advance our Service-Oriented Architecture for serving a large-scale database of environmental measurements and simulations of the coasts and estuaries of the Pacific Northwest.

Working with computer scientists and engineers in both academic and commercial institutions, the position will use open standards to design and build web services for accessing and integrating coastal ocean and estuary sensor data from buoys, vessels, fixed moorings, aircraft, satellites, and autonomous unmanned vehicles, as well as the results of high-resolution multi-year ocean circulation simulations. This open-source suite of services will empower scientists, policy makers, and the general public to construct their own applications using the NANOOS data inventory.

About NANOOS
NANOOS is a federally funded partnership led by University of Washington, Oregon Health & Science University and Oregon State University with a mandate to collect and disseminate coastal ocean and estuarine data and products that can be used to
» improve predictions of climate change and its coastal impacts
» more effectively protect and restore healthy marine ecosystems
» sustain marine resources
» reduce public health risks through better assessment and prediction
» more effectively mitigate the effects of natural hazards
» improve the safety and efficiency of marine operations
» enhance national security

Location
NANOOS is operated wholly at its partner institutions' facilities. The advertised position will be a full-time employee of Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and reside with the NSF Science and Technology Center for Coastal Margin Observation and Prediction (CMOP) in Beaverton, Oregon on OHSU's West Campus, 15 minutes outside of Portland. CMOP is another federally sponsored program integrating research, education, knowledge transfer, and diversity programs related to estuaries and coastal margins.

CMOP is committed to improving the diversity of the U.S. workforce in science and engineering. Women and persons from underrepresented minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

World-class science and engineering
The successful candidate will work closely with computer scientists and engineers at Oregon Health & Science University, Boeing, University of Washington, and Oregon State University on the design of the overall data management system, and have daily interaction with researchers in computer science, oceanography, and microbiology here at CMOP.

National exposure
NANOOS is one of only nine regional associations in the United States. This position will therefore have significant exposure at the national level, including participation in the design and evaluation of data exchange standards and protocols.

Real challenges
Our data management systems aim to provide real-time access to terabytes of geo-referenced environmental information using modern SOA techniques. The data and systems landscape here at NANOOS is unique in the world; the successful candidate will be instrumental in helping to realize the vision.

Real vision
CMOP is committed to improving the diversity of the U.S. workforce in science and engineering. Women and persons from underrepresented minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

We are 100% open source.

We have an open data policy: all our data is released to the public domain as soon as is feasible.
