Today we went out to AM011 and AM012. Michael took measurements of AMB11 while Matt and I stayed in the boat and organized tools to pass up. The plan for putting a vertical profiler on AM012 has changed and we are now planning on placing it on AM011 instead.

Saturday Academy

Today Saturday Academy went out on Forerunner. We went in two groups. Once the first group was loaded we went out to Green 43 to take two CTD casts, one sample with the 3 liter niskin bottle, and a larger sample with the airlift pump. Then we headed back and picked up the second group and repeated the procedure with them.
Fish Counter II

The fish counter that was removed from beneath Forerunner on July 2, 2007 and sent off to Mary Moser has now been put back under Forerunner. We received the counter back from Mary when she found that the battery had died shortly after the previous deployment.
First day on Forerunner
July 17, 2007
Today we went out on Forerunner for the July ETM Chase REU Cruise. We were accompanied by a small group from the Northwest Aquatic Marine Educators (NAME) conference that was in Astoria. We departed at around 10:00am and headed upstream a little ways to do a CTD cast and take a freshwater sample. We then headed downstream to AM169 and proceded to do CTD casts and samples. We repeated this proceedure at Green 33, Green 35, 1Km intervals for four Kilometers, Red 26, and Red 22. At Green 33 we attempted to create a moderate siphon, using 2" diameter tubing, to obtain larger samples of water. Unfortunately the length of tubing was not long enough for the site so we continued taking samples with the niskin bottle. Then we went up to drop the NAME group off before taking one last CTD cast and sample. Then we headed back to dock and arrived at around 7:00pm.

July 12, 2007
Today we put the Corie in at Hammond and motored down to Red 26. Our job was to check the instruments, clean barnacles and the like off of them, and change them if need be. Michael and Charles then dove down and retrieved the bottom instrument. The bottom instrument was replaced and the middle and top were cleaned with a bottle brush and a hand brush. After that we went over to Desdemona Sands day marker to check on the growth of the juvenile cormorants at that site. Unfortunately there aren't any pictures because I forgot the camera back at the office. oops.

Fish Counter

Today Michael dove down and retrieved a fish counter that was installed below Forerunner. This equiptment was a Vr2 distributed by VEMCO. Now we are sending it back to Mary Moser with NOAA Fisheries.

Woody Island Cleaning
June 27, 2007
Today we went up to the station at Woody Island. The solar pannel reading had nearly flat lined because of the cormorant colony that nests on it. We put in at John Day and began heading up. Along the way we stopped at sveni (Svenson Island) and marsh (Marsh Island). We then reached woody (Woody Island) and Michael climbed up and cleaned off the solar pannel. Once done we headed over to eliot (Elliot Point) and mottb (Mott Basin).
Corie Excursion

Today Michael and I went out on the R/V Corie. Our first stop was AM169. Michael went up to retrieve data from the site with the onboard computer. After that we headed out to AM012. On the way we ran into the bar and pulled out the paddles. Not too long of a paddle before we were on our way again. Once we reached AM012 we got the ladder hooked up and Michael went up to have a look around. Michael took some measurements and had a look at the beams to see what would work best for installing a vertical profiler. The profiler would go about 60 to 65 feet to the bottom and eventually be moving and taking readings continously.
Hypoxia and Estuarine Turbidity Maxima

Hi, my name is Christina Tweed and it's my first day here at M.E.R.T.S. I just graduated from Astoria High School and am planning on going to Oregon State University in the fall.
Today I researched hypoxia and estuarine turbidity maxima in anticipation of CTD sets.
The first step was researching what these were as well as the history that goes along with them. After looking these up I studied the protocol for the research that went along with these terms. This gave me a better understanding of some of the reasons why we are doing these CTD sets.
