Week Three

This week, I did sojme experiments on how temperature affects the concentration of ammonium detected in a sample. It's been a little difficult to get my samples down to 4 degrees celsius; we've tried both an ice bath and a controlled water bath. Also, Zanna Chase came over from OSU to discuss what we'll be doing when I go to spend a week over there in July. It was really great being able to talk with her about the project and to get an idea of what I'll be doing while I'm at OSU. I also washed out lots of bottles to prepare for my sampling trip out with Jami. We're going to get samples from a few different rivers and a few wastewater treatment plants; I'm very interested to see how the ammonium concentrations will differ. On Friday, we all went to see Bonneville Dam! Very cool! I had heard about the fish ladder before, but I hadn't realized how much like a ladder it actually is until I saw it for myself. I do think it's a little funny they send the lampreys shooting out through a tube several feet above the water. Well, that just makes them magical, flying lampreys, doesn't it? Yes, Bonneville Dam is a fantastical place indeed!

Hiking up to the top of the waterfall

Banana slugs!!!!! Super awesome.

I'd be waaaaay too lazy to climb this ladder. Those fish are very persistent.
