Food & vampires (9/4/09)

A large subset of the True Blood fans enjoying episode 37 in the lounge. Guess which ones secretly wish they were vampires! From left to right: Michelle Maier, Justin Reina, Sara Bender, Colleen Durkin, Caroline Fortunado, and Pete Kahl.

Not everything that goes on during a research cruise is about science. In fact, we have been having some fascinating conversations concerning the practical and physiological difficulties one must address to make the concept of vampires palatable to even a moderately scientifically-minded individual. It's tough, I'm not sure it's possible. Nevertheless, almost the entire scientific party has elected to buy-in to the fantasy of vampires running around in the modern world, all part of their completely unhealthy (in my opinion) obsession with the series True Blood.

Whenever I come back from a cruise, I invariably end up talking about the food at least as much as the science. But I'm always dissatisfied relying on verbal descriptions, and I never quite remember all the things I eat. It finally occurred to me that a photo-essay might just do the trick! So, here's everything I ate on the boat on the 3rd!

A yummy breakfast burrito with all the trimmings. And orange juice!

Not the best coffee ever, but a little sugar and non-dairy creamer does wonders.

A delicious pulled-pork bbq sandwich, with the best baked beans ever!

More coffee, plus some candy and nuts

A cute fruit push-up. But I had to go immediately back for...

...an ice cream sandwich!

Coffee and Raisinetes -- a combination that was far better than I expected. A Swedish fish too. Because I like fish.

Almost like Thanksgiving!

Those pulled-pork sandwiches were pretty good warmed up in the microwave

I actually opened the sardines for the squid, but they didn't dig 'em. So I ate them instead. More coffee too.

Crunchberry cereal and cranberry juice! This photo is going to make my 12 year old son, who I won't buy this junk for, quite indignant

What makes a better bedtime snack than a hamburger with a side of jellybeans, and a hot chocolate to wash it all down with?
