Week 4
After analyzing the data from last week I discovered that manganese dioxide does not oxidize caffeine, which is a major setback. We are probably going to abandon this part of the project due to the lack of a reaction. I was successful at synthesizing new synthetic manganese dioxide which is more reactive than the previous sample which had degraded in solution over the course of a year. I’m still waiting for the supplies to arrive to make the electrode to characterize the biogenic manganese dioxide. Hopefully they will arrive next week! I’m a little bummed that the caffeine route is not going to work, but that is how things go in research.
