So on Monday we finall struck some gold! Incidentally the gold vein was in a place we hadn't even considered. On the 11th Tawnya and I prepared a dilution series (a method of isolating organisms) fairly hastily mainly just to get me acquainted with the process - we used a medium that we weren't even planning to use long term because it contained silicates, and the whole thing was just done rapidly. I remember checking them on the 12th and didn't see anything promising and we figured it was due to the preparation.

Well this week has felt slow and somewhat frustrating, but before I touch on that I thought I'd toss in a Google Maps image (since I forgot to bring my camera) of the region where we collected the water sample from Hayden Island in Week 1:

What a week! So on Monday I met all my new colleagues: the mentors and the other interns. I was really excited to meet my mentors: Tawnya and Michelle, along with all the others in my lab.
