Kenneth Olden, PhD, ScD, LHD, former Director, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, will address the theme of diversity.

Topic: "Improving the Local Climate for Underserved Populations in Academia."

About Dr. Olden: Dr. Kenneth Olden was the first African American to serve as the headof an NIH institute. He is a pioneer in linking gene-environment interactions to human health and chronic disease. He also revolutionized the NIEHS by broadening its scope to include large-scale human studies, relating environmental agents to human health. Dr. Olden further pioneered community participation in research by recognizing that local communities can serve as sentinels for emerging health problems but lack access to research expertise. In 2007, he served as the Yerby Visiting Professor at the Harvard School of Public Health.
